Otto's Character Development
In my tutorial with Justin, we spoke about Otto's character and who he actually is. Otto steals people's minds because he wants to be in the most intelligent man on earth in history, but why? Maybe he questions his knowledge a lot, maybe he thinks he lacks it. We also spoke about the people Otto targets. He steals the minds of intelligent people and also people who are just generally successful. He also targets people who have a lot of charisma and are liked by the public. Otto wants to be liked by the public too however he is an introvert and is very shy and doesn't like speaking to people. Otto would rather spend his time in his lab, alone working on his inventions. We also spoke about how this character could change. At the start we see Otto's shadow. He is seen alone in his lab mumbling to himself. In the first third of the animation, Otto is quiet and doesn't like speaking to people. In the middle section, a larger amount of people start visiting the gallery. Otto plucks up the courage, with his newly gained charisma, to come out of his lab and speak to the people in the gallery. A few people walk over to him, realising that he is the man who created the lightbulbs. The people are wowed and confused at the fact the lightbulbs aren't plugged into anything yet they are still on. In the last third of the animation, after stealing the minds of a lot of charismatic and intelligent people, Otto comes out of his lab and begins speaking to the people, holding out his arms and speaking loudly and clearly. In this part of the animation Otto is almost like a sadistic Willy Wonka. People are surrounding him, amazed. People cant work out the lightbulbs. How are these lightbulbs on when there is no wires or anything connected to them. This new found confidence ends up rotting him though. Otto can see that the public are growing to like him. People from all over are coming to visit the gallery. His addiction to mind theft takes over him at the end. He is addicted to feeling confident and intelligent and happier. He begins stealing as many minds as possible and that's when his head explodes.
To add more depth to the character, there could also be a flashback scene. As the viewer, we are trying to understand why Dr. Dinkelman does this awful thing. Is there an understandable reason? In the flashback, maybe Otto is at a science contest and everyone is making fun of him because of the way he looks and the way he dresses. I could also show a newspaper page in this flashback where the title reads "Creepy Teenager Thinks He Has What It Takes To Win". This shows that even back then, the public didn't like him very much and this mistreatment lead him to steal peoples minds. Otto is getting revenge for all those years he felt down.
